I couldn’t imagine an Easter Sunday without my pretty hat. And each year I looked forward to selecting a new one.
Today, as I see the new spring outfits being sold in the stores, pictures of me as a child wearing my Easter bonnet float easily to mind. As years went by and fashions changed, some of our hats seem funny looking to me now…easily revealing the era we lived in at the time.
But it was our faith in Christ that was central to our lives and church attendance naturally followed. For us, dressing up for church showed respect to God whom we had come to worship (though the thrill of the new shoes, hats, dresses, etc. couldn’t be denied!).
Looking back at Ephesians 6: 16 – 18, NLT we find that our next piece of armor has to do with our faith.
The Roman soldier always had his shield ready to deflect the enemies attempts to wound or kill him. He trained in how to position it for protection as he went into battle.
We, too, enter a spiritual battlefield every day. The enemy, Satan, is relentless and will aim his fiery darts nonstop to disarm us and paralyze us.
That is why our faith must be fortified through daily prayer, time in God’s Word and nurtured through strong biblical teaching and time spent with other believers. Then when the devil shoots the arrows of doubt, fear, lies, deception, and discouragement our training kicks in and we are ready with our shield of faith.
That faith is the assurance that I am a child of God. Trust is established and I am steadfast in His truth. Therefore, my faith shield will quench his fiery darts as Scripture says.
So, time to hang up that straw hat on a peg and make room for the special hat God has specifically designed for my protection. I can still wear my Easter bonnet over it, but without this accessory, I would be defenseless.
1 Thessalonians 5:8 puts it this way… “Let us who live in the light be clearheaded protected by the armor of faith and love, and wearing as our helmet the confidence of our salvation.”
You see, the helmet of salvation must be in place for all the other pieces of the armor to function. We must receive God’s free gift of salvation won for us at the cross in order to belong to Him.
As it says in Song of Solomon 6: 3, NKJV “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine.”
When you know you belong to God, you can go forth in humility that, by His grace, you are His child. And you can walk in confidence that He who lives within you is greater than he who is in the world.
As it says in I Corinthians 15: 3, NLT “Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said. He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said.” And that same power that raised Jesus from the dead lives in us when Jesus indwells us through the Holy Spirit.
The power of the resurrection creates the best head covering ever! Selah
